The Center for Teaching and Learning is pleased to announce the launching of Express PD, a series of ten 20-minute videos from Magna Commons, which brings you top content from the Annual Teaching Professor Conference. The goal of the Express PD Series is to reinvigorate your teaching through insights from these quick-hitting 20-minute videos, which offer solutions to common classroom challenges.

The Generate Student Persistence and Engagement through Gamification 3 Pack, presented by Kristin Ziska Strange, provides simple explanations of the basic elements of gamification, tips for starting small with gamification strategies, and methods for creating more advanced combinations of gamified elements.

The programs in this multipack will help you create clear objectives, implement creative problem solving, embrace failure, develop deliberate feedback, encourage a growth mindset in students, and improve student comprehension of course material.

A new video will be released every Tuesday morning for the next 3 weeks.

LEARNING GOALS

Upon completion of these programs, you’ll be able to:

• Be able to identify one small section of your course and begin to add the “change mindset” approach of gamification to that piece of content
• Understand gamification strategies and take the steps to design and implement them within courses, trainings, or study groups
• Develop an understanding of tools, learning designs, and elements that will help you maintain a sustainable workload and think reflectively about the gamification process

Week XII: How Can I Use Simple Gamification Strategies to Engage my Students?

This program explains what you need to do to gamify more courses and ensure students persist even through failure. You’ll be exposed to several effective gamification strategies and examples of each. You’ll also explore how these strategies can foster student persistence and engagement.

You will receive the PD Participation Badge after you complete and provide feedback. This will enter you into the EdTech Innovation Chase, which is a game-based digital badging system to provide badges for participating in professional development activities, mentoring, and innovating.
