This session will be a conversation on teaching identity through the lens of our remote-instruction journey. The session will feature Prof. Stacey Cooper, whose own research on identity creates a unique perspective through which to consider these issues. Traditionally, community-college faculty negotiate a balance among the different dimensions of their professional identities. Faculty bring to the institution a plethora of scholarly interests and variety of teaching repertoire. They thenceforth build a Hostos professional identity. This process includes deconstructing themselves to meet the rainbow of student academic needs, embracing a Liberal Arts institutional climate, fulfilling service expectations, and documenting student academic progress while remaining active in their scholarly fields. They need to find creative ways to develop their research interests while engaging students in undergraduate research opportunities. All these practices forge a Hostos professional identity and represent a fertile arena to explore new lines of inquiry.

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning emerges from this fertile ground and encompasses several questions within a simple one: What’s going on with my teaching? This question’s relevance is currently rooted in our development in online teaching and from where a new dimension of our teaching identity is emerging. Participants will be invited to question their own journey while finding ways to explore opportunities for growth, innovation, and scholarly inquiry.
